DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BOURBON AND GEISHA
In the world of speciality coffee, the bean variety is the first step in defining the cup experience. Two of the most emblematic varieties are Bourbon and Geisha, each with very different sensory profiles and brewing methods.
GEISHA VARIANT: ELEGANCE AND COMPLEXITY
The Geisha is recognised worldwide for its sophisticated and exotic profile. It is distinguished by:
Profile of flavour: a bright acidity and a distinctly floral character.
Sensory experience: it is a highly aromatic variety, often with notes of jasmine or citrus.
Ideal method: to appreciate its complexity, we recommend filter methods such as the V60, which bring out its delicate nuances.
BOURBON VARIANT: SWEETNESS AND BALANCE
The Bourbon is a balanced classic, appreciated for its body and its accessibility on the palate. Its main characteristics are:
Profile of flavour: it has a moderate acidity and a notably sweet aftertaste.
Sensory experience: it offers notes that often recall chocolate or caramel, providing a comforting mouthfeel.
Ideal method: thanks to its balance, it is excellent for pressure and immersion methods, such as the Italian moka pot or super-automatic coffee machines.
WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT?
If you are new to speciality coffee, our recommendation is Bourbon. As it does not have such an intense citrus load and offers a sweet finish, it is an excellent gateway to train the palate before exploring the more complex notes you will find in the Geisha variety.
